Youth Empowerment
Jenga Hustle
PAWA implemented a project called Jenga Hustle (2018-2021) that sought to employ the organization’s integrated art, media, and technology model to contribute to creating and enhancing economic opportunities and decent work for young people. With a focus on Nairobi County, PAWA’s interventions entailed equipping youth with knowledge and building their confidence to engage with duty bearers to implement policies that commit to employment creation.
The outcomes of the project included:
- Strengthened social movements of young women and youths for advocacy on better delivery of gender-responsive public services and access to employment and economic opportunities.
- Enhanced provision of gender responsive public services including transparent and accountable delivery of Covid-19 interventions.
- Increased funds to sectors creating employment opportunities for the youths.
- Increased access to skills for young people and women living in poverty and exclusion in employment spaces in the Digital Economy.
- Institutional development support.
Art Continues
The #ArtContinues project sought to ensure PAWA’s programming continues amidst the ongoing pandemic. The project boosted and supported the capacity of emerging artists to showcase their work online via provision of live-streaming platforms to record songs, poems etc.
To this end, PAWA organised two online campaigns on the issues of:
- Mental Health amidst the pandemic for Kenyan youth and artists
- Gender Based Violence.
Through these two campaigns, PAWA sought to engage the public and other stakeholders to explore the two issues that affected people during the pandemic, and together seek solutions to address the said challenges.
PAWA Masterclasses
A monthly seminar presented to emerging artists by a professional of a particular artistic discipline in order to assist in further developing their skills.
Give The Woman Her Flowers
The show, Give The Woman Her Flowers, was the culmination of a PAWA254 masterclass facilitated by Sitawa Namwalie. 8 poets were selected and taken through an intense training that saw them learn new skills in poetry performance and the creative process one goes through in production. The result of the masterclass was a poetry anthology that each of the 8 poets contributed 8 pieces to. It is from this anthology that a show staged on the 8th July was adapted.
The show’s objective were to:
- Help the poets improve their ability to show-case themselves;
- Help the poets showcase their poetry;
- Equip them with advanced event planning skills and;
- Teach them how to monetize their art.
